About

A Brooklyn dance archive.

sturdy.dance is a small archive of Brooklyn-born dance culture. It documents the choreographers, the music, and the cultural history that turned drill-tempo bounce into a movement called sturdy.

It started where it should have — on the block, with kids cracking moves to whatever beat was loud enough that day. The drill wave gave it a name and a sound. The dancers gave it shape. This site catches some of it before it disappears.

What's here

  • Move notes. Written breakdowns of each move with an editorial portrait of the dancer. No video — text and stills only. Tagged by level so beginners aren't drowning in advanced footwork.
  • Choreographer profiles. Names, neighborhoods, signature moves. The people doing the work.
  • Drill history timeline. Pop Smoke to 22Gz to Sheff G — the moments that built the soundtrack.
  • Audio loops. Drill-tempo and trap loops, free-licensed, to drill the steps against.
  • Workshops. In-person sessions in Brooklyn. RSVP by email — most are pay-what-you-can.

Who runs it

A small independent operation, based out of Brooklyn. Photos credited where used; audio loops are licensed for free use under the Mixkit Stock Music Free License. Cultural history written from public reporting, interviews, and the work of the people who lived it.
