Kool Herc's Sedgwick Avenue party
August 11, 1973 — Cindy Campbell threw a back-to-school party in the rec room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx. Her brother Clive — DJ Kool Herc — was on the turntables. He extended the percussive break in the records he was playing by running two copies and switching between them. The dancers responded. That breakbeat is the seed of hip-hop. The dancers who showed up for it became the first b-boys and b-girls. Every form of dance documented on this site traces upstream to that room.
