Larry Levan begins residency at Paradise Garage
Paradise Garage opened on King Street in Manhattan in 1977. Larry Levan was the DJ — a residency that ran a decade and shaped a generation of dancers. The dance that came out of the club picked up the building's name. Garage house, and the long-form sweating-it-out floor dance that came with it, trace to this room. Mostly Black, mostly gay, mostly underground. The mainstream didn't catch up until the room had already closed.
