Crystal Waters releases Gypsy Woman
Featured: Crystal Waters, Basement Boys
Crystal Waters and the Basement Boys put out Gypsy Woman in 1990. It reached number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 the following year — rare territory for a house record. The track carried the underground vocabulary into pop charts and introduced a generation outside of New York and Chicago to the house dance pocket.
House dancers like Ejoe Wilson, Marjory Smarth, and Brian Footwork Green — the names that built the house dance vocabulary — finally had a pop moment to dance over.
