Paris Is Burning enters the mainstream
Paris Is Burning released in 1990 — the documentary Jennie Livingston filmed across the late-80s Harlem ballroom scene. The film centered the houses (House of Xtravaganza, House of LaBeija, House of Ninja) and the dance that came out of them, voguing. For most of the audience watching, it was the first time they saw the form. The dancers in the film mostly didn't see the money the film made. Ballroom and vogue still feed contemporary choreography today — Camille A. Brown and Ephrat Asherie both cite it as source material. The lineage is direct.
