Chief Keef's early tracks define Chicago drill
Chicago drill predates Brooklyn drill by most of a decade. Chief Keef — Keith Cozart, fourteen years old — was uploading tracks from the South Side of Chicago in 2009 and 2010. The sound — sparse, heavy 808s, distorted vocals, documentary lyric content — became the template for what UK drill picked up in 2014 and what 808Melo passed back to Brooklyn in 2018. Don't Like (2012) is the track most people cite. The groundwork was being laid three years earlier in the same South Side blocks.
