Breaking debuts at the Paris Olympics
Breaking — the dance that started at Sedgwick Avenue in 1973 — made its Olympic debut at the Paris Games on August 9-10, 2024, at Place de la Concorde. Sixteen b-girls competed on day one, sixteen b-boys on day two. Japan's B-Girl Ami took gold in the women's, Canada's B-Boy Phil Wizard in the men's. The Olympic inclusion split the scene. The OGs were ambivalent — codifying breaking into score sheets reshapes what it is. The younger generation mostly cheered. Either way, the form is now visible to an audience that didn't know its name a year earlier.
